Sustainable Travel Tip #3

When should you print or view on a computer screen?

Ok, when you travel it's not great to carry around loads of paperwork. However, interestingly, from a sustainable point of view, there has been calculations done to work out exactly when one should print something out versus reading something online. This takes into consideration the power/electricity for a computer and that of a printer and paper usage.

Comes out at 5.2 minutes per side of a page. If you spend that much time reading a page, it's better for the environment that you print it! Here is the link for the details of the calculation:

Sustainable Travel Tip # 2

Take a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go.

There are usually water fountains around to top it up (not necessarily in developing countries, but sometimes you can boil water or get access to purified water). This will save a lot of money spent on bottled water and also reduce environmental impact of plastic bottles from bottled water.

Most airports (especially in the USA) have water fountains located near the restrooms. This is great before an international flight to make sure you have plenty of water to drink on the plane, after you've passed security (no liquids or gels above 3 oz or 100ml). However, only place I couldn't find a water fountain was in Nadi, Fiji. Not sure why there wasn't one or if there was I couldn't see it.

Most public parks and shopping centres will have a water fountain. Best water fountain I came across was in Montreal's Bonsecours Market (in the historic part of town), which has filtered water from their water fountain.

If you like your purified water, there is a product called Bobble which has a filter at the neck of the bottle. A friend of mine loves her Bobble!

If you want something that is travel light (rolls up uninflated), then there are many new products like Vapur which are an inflatable reusable water bottle. Another friend of mine loves his Vapur type bottle.

My favourite are the Nalgene water bottles, sturdy, BPA free, can handle both hot and cold liquids.

Most of these reusable water bottles can be purchased for about AUD/USD $10 or less (depends on volume).

Stay hydrated! :-)

Sustainable travel tip #1

Being my first travel tip, I'm going to take it slow. The way travel should be!

Tip number 1: Walk (if you can)

Obvious yes, but not everyone does this!

I find walking around cities I'm visiting an enjoyable way to see the city. You never know what you might discover at a walking pace (rather than drive, bus or bikes). It also makes it a lot easier to take photos!

Reasons it's sustainable:

1. Minimal impact on the local environment (as long as you're respectful if walking through parks and don't litter!)

2. Gives one more opportunity to observe and respect the local culture

3. More chances to spend money in the local economy by coffee and cake <insert your preferred travelling pastime here> stops.

Travel safe!
